I don't see that post. Nevermind...

10 pm - Computer wouldn't let me download. Got this error message:
WINZIP.EXE is damanged. Please reload from distribution disk.

What browser are you using? Are you able to download the file? (Winzip being corrupted shouldn't block the download)

Try using Firefox.

Don't know if my last post went thru, but it was that I already tried downloading the files but couldn't. Got an error message (see above at 8:34 pm.)

Well, they were downloading, but I chose "Run" vs. Save so it stopped with the error message. Should I try again, or can we finx WinZip?

I have both IE & Firefox. Right now I'm using IE. Should i open Firefox, and if so, why?

This means that the file has downloaded properly.
I suggest you save it to your hard drive first.

Then, I suggest uninstalling Winzip, and replacing it with a much better utility called 7-Zip.
Get it here: http://www.7-zip.org/
Run the installer. It should also install a shell extension that will allow you to right click on the file you want to unzip, choose "7-Zip", and then select "Extract Files"

EDIT: This isn't a problem with IE, you don't need to use Firefox

Couldn't uninstall winzip. got t his message: WINZIP.CHM is in use by another program.

Re: Firefox. I know the problem has nothing to do with IE, but wondered why you mentioned Firefox.

I'm on my way to find and download 7-zip. I saved the files to my desktop. Will 7-zip know where to put them?

Just run the 7-Zip installer then. You don't need to uninstall WinZip.

Re: Firefox. I know the problem has nothing to do with IE, but wondered why you mentioned Firefox.

Sorry, I just got a little confused.

Will 7-zip know where to put them?

Once you install 7-Zip, right click the file you want to unzip, and go to "7-Zip" then select "Extract Files"
7-Zip will extract the file to your desktop, if that is where the .zip file is.

EDIT: Going to bed now. Ill be back around at 4:00 PM PST. Someone else might step in and help you further.

Actually, there's a selection to choose from. Turns out that 7z465.exe is the 32-bit, fyi. I found this out when I copied the table below from their site. On the site itself, it doesn't show the info in (parenthesis), but it appeared when I copied.

7-Zip
Latest 4.65 Notes (2009-02-03 07:50)
7z465.exe 939956 4301848 i386 .exe (32-bit Windows)
7z465_extra.7z 283996 49775 i386 Other Binary Package
7z465-ia64.msi 1690624 16614 IA64 .msi (Windows installer)
7z465.msi 1004032 145421 i386 .msi (Windows installer)
7z465.tar.bz2 658088 29124 Any Source .bz2
7z465-x64.msi 1222656 521192 AMD64 .msi (Windows installer)
7za465.zip 360980 95283 i386

WHAT'S NEXT? 2 things: I am going to borrow the XP CD from a friend next week. Should we wait till then before proceeding?

With an XP CD we should be able to run a repair, and that may fix all of your problems. But first lets try to fix them manually.
http://sourceforge.n...ror=superb-west
There is a download link for 7zip (the version you need)

Download the chipset and audio drivers from here: http://support.dell..../...tid=&impid=
Then, unzip them with 7-zip. Then install them with a reboot between the 2 installs.

I already have downloaded all those files. I haven't unzipped them yet, but I will. Where should I save them to? Under Windows?

I don't have a lot of time until next week. I'm working till 11 pm through Sunday. So I will only be online sporadically. Right now I have to go offline. I work online and I've been at my desk since 4 pm. CST.

Unzip them anywhere. Then open the unzipped folder, and run the installer in it.
