Not sure if this was a vista or hardware problem,
but I have an hp laptop that is running vista and recently
when I enter my password to log in and after the screen says
welcome the laptop screen goes blank (gray-black) and my mouse
pointer is still shown. After a few minutes windows loads normally
and I can use the laptop with no problems. I have tried turning off
some of the programs that start automatically with windows and this
has not helped speed up the process and I am not sure what to do.

Frequently (but not all the time) this is a video driver issue. Try updating your video drivers from the HP website. If that doesn't help, then try the drivers from the website of the manufacturer of your video chipset (ATI, nVidia, Intel, etc).
