Hey everyone,
so I put together a list of a proposed computer that I want to build.
mobo http://www.newegg.co...N82E16813130223
crossfire video cards http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814102824
cpu http://www.newegg.co...N82E16819103471
hdd http://www.newegg.co...N82E16822148433
case http://www.newegg.co...N82E16811146027
either:
monitor A http://www.newegg.co...N82E16824009145
or monitor B http://www.newegg.co...N82E16824236050
optical drive http://www.newegg.co...N82E16827151173

However, I was told by multiple people that ddr3 is a waste right now, so I'm thinking of trashing that mobo and cpu. Can anyone suggest another cpu/mobo? I'd prefer to still have crossfire.

Also, what about a power supply? I have no idea how many watts/whatever I need for my computer. Also, which monitor would be better?

hey trippster, thanks a lot man.

that was the wrong CPU : / I meant to link this one: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16819103674

can you recommend a good computer case and pus? I'd prefer to have one that lights up :) those are always cool.

also do you have msn? it might be easier to talk on there.

I'm gonna be using Windows Vista 64 bit most likely. I was going to do windows 7, but I realized that I'll have to re-install it later on, and that seemed just like too much of a hassle.

and for the case, i'm generally not a fan of silver/white ones. I like black cases better : / . And I won't get LED lights, because it will be in my room (good suggestion). Also, a really quiet PC would be nice. So I guess one that stays cool, and is also quiet. Preferably mostly black, but can have a little bit of another color.

and what about that cpu i linked? yes no?

also, newegg has a deal for that power supply and a case: http://www.newegg.co...st=Combo.198939 But i heard that case isn't so good?

Everything so far checks out.

My suggestions -

1. Depending on your budget, I would get a newer model graphics card.
2. Find some 240pin DDR3 memory. With 64bit vista, I would go for 6-8GB. (Corsair makes great memory)
3. With crossfire, your case is going to be quite cluttered, these video cards may take up some hard drive slots, not to mention working inside your case will be extremely difficult. If you dont care about your case size or plan to never move it, go for a full tower instead of a mid-tower. It will look like a nuke sitting next to your desk or bed, but it will be better for cooling, working space, and insulation.
4. Optical drive is ok, if budget permits again, I would go for a second optical drive since they are so cheap. You never know when one will fail or start acting up.

hey man thanks for these. I don't want a cluttered case, so if I'm not getting crossfire now, what video card would you suggest? I wanna be able to play wc3, and eventually sc2 when it comes out. Also, I just want a case that is quiet, I don't care about size. And my budget is very flexible, so any suggestions I can probably fit in.

for memory, I found this: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820145221
the reviews seemed good on it

also i've been looking and i'm not sure what to look for in the wireless card section, think you can help me with that? I will be running an ethernet cable to the computer, but I guess wireless can't hurt as well.

ouch, thats a mighty expensive case : /

I was hopping for one thats maybe $100 max. And why can't those 4870s work as crossfire? i was told by some other people that they were pretty good.

and for memory how about this http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820145222 will it work with AM3 processor?

also that wireless card had reviews that showed it had troubles with vista. Maybe i'll just stick to the ethernet cable.

my budget is expandable, but not to the point where every item is 200 bucks :S

I was looking at your list of items...

There were only a few things that I would reconsider...

The Ram you chose DDR2-800 the board is setup for DDR2-1333

Also the seagate HDD has serious known issues I have a 1tb samsung spinpoint 7200 rpm with 32mb cache and I don't have any problems

Just some thoughts

Good luck

oh about the case, i'm going with the antec 900. http://www.newegg.co...N82E16811129021

well, as long as it is ddr2 240 pin shouldn't it fit? Also, it is 1333 OC which I believe is Overclock. because I've tried looking and you have to overclock your RAM to get it that high. Since it is ddr2 240 pin (the one i picked) shouldn't that work?

and my optical drive is this one (the other one is not available):

The Antec 900 is a nice case it has good space, and good cooling features...

About the Ram:

Yes the ram you chose would work, but it is slow... You probably also would not get it up to those speeds.
(The system will likely refuse to P.O.S.T. if you were to try)

You want to choose ram that has a speed closest to the required speed... Click here for a link to Ram that should be right up your alley.

I forgot to mention that the optical drive you had linked to was on backorder..

The drive looks like it should be fine... I haven't used it. My personal preference are the LG DVD burners. I have had good luck with them and implement them in all of my builds...

Good luck

hope this helps,

Cbarnard

I have heard some negative things about OCZ fatal1ty series. but currently I can't remember what the problem is... Read the reviews... (remember sometimes people couple the ram with setups that aren't 100% compatable, but they still give things bad reviews, due to their lack of knowledge)
If you don't plan on OCing the ram then the OCZ should be fine... you will only get about a 10% OC with this ram from what I have read...

Here is a link to Patriot memory...

If price is not so much a factor... I prefer this Ram made by Corsair

Looking over your current list (with exception to the Ram and the HDD, I would make the purchase)

I hope I have been able to help you out...

Good luck
