Hi there,

got a problem here and I'm not sure of the root cause. Two events which may or may not be relevant to the problem that took place around the same time a)he installation of Internet Explorer 8 2)The adding of a router so we could have a wireless connection to laptops in the house.

The problem is now that when you go to download something it will reach a certain percentage, and just stop. Try again and you may get a different percentage. Try it say 10 times, and it might eventually download it. The PC never did this before. The size of the file seems to make little difference either.

Another thing it's affecting - video streaming on sites such as Youtube for example. Videos will only load a certain way then just stop.

I ran various virus checks and spyware removal tools, but the problem remains.

Any suggestions? I know 'get rid of IE' may be one but I'd like to avoid this if possible as its a shared PC and everyone likes what they are use to (=scared of change).

Hope you can help,

James

Hey mate,

"Get rid of IE" is not my answer, but you can install another browser for testing? Firefox is pretty popular... Just don't set it as the "default" browser when you install it.

Let me know how that pans out.

Hey Troy can i offer something also?
Maybe try a System Restore before IE8 update.
Does problem still happen then?
If not then try running update again through Microsoft Update page. It may have just been a corrupted update.

I would try another browser first, and also uninstalling IE8 before System Restore.

System Restore always seems to cause other hassles that I usually leave until the last resort.

Thanks, I'll have a go. Whether I can actually download it anyway is another story...

Right, I've tried it using Firefox but both issues remain. Does this point to some kind of spyware possibly?

Can you explain the "adding a wireless router" scenario a bit better? How does this computer connect - wired or wirelessly? Do other computers on your network experience the same issue?

The main PC (that I'm on now) is wired, but its set up to a router so people can use their laptops off it. I think there is the same issue on the laptops though Im not sure.

Im coming round to the idea that its the router, possibly a firmware issue as I googled the problem with our make of router and got a few results back.

Okay then let us know how you go after a firmware upgrade.
