Okay here is the deal,

I have a server that is running a SuperMicro Main board. I do not know the spec of the board it self, unless I yank this machine apart again.

But here are the system Specs
Super Micro Server Main Board
2 Intel P3 @ 550mghz
768mb SD-Ram @ 133mghz
1 40gb WD IDE Hard Drive with the OS
2 9gb Seagate SCSI in a raid 5 I believe
1 ATI AIW 9800 Pro
1 SCSI Raid Card
2 300watt PSU in redundancy

OS is Windows 2003 Standard Server

Now in Windows 2003 it doesn't give me any info on why it alarms. But it alarms every night @ 2-3am it last roughly and hour then stops. I am usually asleep when it goes off, and I end up shutting it down. This server does NAT and file sharing as of now, I DO Not have a router so don't say use a router instead. If you say I should buy one send it to me since I can not afford it right now.

Anyways back on topic. The server alarms as previously stated around 2-3 am and it lasts for an hour. Since when this goes off, my computers are obtaining updates at this time, Since I have satellite I have manage my downloads. If I leave it alone it will stop and it is fine. And the server is running fine during the alarm. I've had no data loss since the alarm is from the RAID Card I THINK.

Either way I am open to suggestions on what I can do to track what causes the alarm.

The BIOS probably has an alarm clock feature in it. Go in there and turn it off.

I'll look into that. I should of stated it started 2wks ago and been doing it ever since.

Check to make sure its not overheating. Do you have any kind of event monitoring software on it?

No kind of event monitoring on it all. So far its been with in a normal range for temps. 35-50c nothing over that.

What kind of beeping is it?

BEEEP pause 3 sec, repeat for an hour, stop.

The machine is stable as a rock, just that infernal beeping drives me nuts at night.

EDIT:: Any shutdowns that are unexpected before 2am are from me shutting down the server with out using RDC to shut it down before it drives me nuts.

I would say disconnect the system speaker for now. Have you checked the BIOS? Some of them, especially ones for servers, will log system errors.

The only speaker that is hooked and can't be removed is the speaker on the Raid SCSI card. The normal Board speaker is removed. I'll have to hook the system back up to a monitor and keyboard so I can poke through the bios on both the mainboard and the raid card.

Well I found out the problem. Even though windows didn't recognize any of the drives failing the SCSI Raid card did, and the drive would work, and fail. And soon as I entered the utility for the Raid card is when it told me that one or more drives in the array were failing/failed.

I couldn't clear out the error even with pulling the drives, so I yanked the card to completely disable the drives temporarily until I can get replacement drives. But at this point I just may drop the Raid array in that system for awhile until I upgrade the server with all new parts to sustain a virtual environment on Windows 2008 Server.

I figured there would be something in the BIOS error log. What kind of RAID bus are you using? You may need to upgrade it to support 2008. SAS Arrays ftw

The raid card is from MegaTrends. It is all I know about that card, and I already know when I upgrade to 2008 I am going to have to replace the server completely. I may only use the 3 NIC cards I have in it, in 2008, and maybe a few other small parts like the IDE HDD but I am not sure.


Right now funds are limited and I need to figure out if I want to use Dual CPU's again.

Tried that, this card that is in the machine does not support it. It is either online and alarms @ 230am or marked failed and alarms 24/7. So I salvaged the data from it and pulled the card for time being until I can afford to upgrade.

I am going to have to piece mail the server since I wont have roughly 4k to drop @ once. My biggest expenditure on it are the dual Intel Xeon E5530 Nehlem series CPU For both CPU's it is gonna run about 1k. But I am hoping by next summer I will have a new server built. More than likely at the time when I buy the CPU's they'll either have better & cheaper variants out or just cheaper.

But this is what I am thinking on my new server,

I need to upgrade this server anyways for future server roles that are going to be assigned to it, and the current one will just get emergency NAT duty

It should be OK in here, if theres something I cant answer then we will post it in there.

What kind of backup solution are you going with? I see it comes with Retrospect. We use it at work, I kind of inherited it and i hate it. Also may be because those servers are still using SDLT drives

Besides that, the build looks fine to me. The ECC registered RAM is an absolute must.

Also, you can just easily swap the RAID card in that old machine and set it up with a BDC role as well as your backup NAT functions.
