Laptop external monitor

Hey, right I have abit of a problem here, I broke the screen on my dell vostro laptop, so I've had an external monitor plugged in for a while, but one problem has happened now.

The laptop crashed, and I cannot get the external monitor to connect to the laptop. I have tried ctrl button for the monitor refresh. This has happened before when the monitor wasn't broken and I had to go onto the nvidia graphic card settings and re select the external monitor, but as I don't have the monitor I cant select it. Any ideas for a quick fix? No money for a new screen as of yet haha
