Laptop Smart failure predicted on Hard disk 2 can I reformat?

I'd been having problems with my gateway laptop just shutting down hard when I walked away for a little while and would come back and it would say it was shut down improperly and I would have to restart it. Could never figure out why it was doing this and had it looked at. No viruses, spyware or other. All my data is backed up and I don't mind reformatting, I am just unsure how to do it on my laptop. Now it won't boot up past you have a Smart failure predicted on disc 2 failure is imminent. press F1. Well that gets a a black screen that NEVER goes away, and I can not get it to perform a system scan, it stops mid scan when I actually get that option on booting up. It's a gateway ma8. If anyone has any suggestions that would be wonderful!!! I'm not afraid of losing data because it's backed up, I just need help with what comes next.

SMART warnings are telling you the drive is on the way out. SMART is an in-advance warning technology which isn't 100% reliable as you can see SMART related issues for years before the drive actually dies. Considering you cannot use the drive now, your best bet is to buy a new one.
