Cant Open Anything! Desktop Icons/Programs Gone

One day I was trying to show all hidden files and selected to apply to all folders and slowly my desktop item started disappearing. It was as if a virus or something had confused my computer and now it doesnt know how to open any file,program, or exe. file. I always get a "Open With" icon. I can somehow still get on the internet, but when i attempt to download software to fix it, the computer says it doesnt know what to open the file with even though the files are .exe files and dont require the use of another program to run. help please!!
