Last night firefox crashed and I attempted to reset my computer to resolve the problem. The computer would not start back up again and would go to a black screen with a blinking cursor. Removing all non essential USB items (ipod mainly) allowed the computer to start up again and it appears to be running normally but I cannot connect to the internet.

I am on a university ethernet connection. It appears to be recognizing the connection as active but I just cannot get any web pages to come up.

So far I have tried doing the "IP release" and "IP renew" in the command console and reset my winsock settings but no luck. Any help would be much appreciated- I am using a 3 year old Dell running XP.

Since you appear to be on the University of Irvine intranet, are you required to run a client to access the net such as Cisco Clean Access?

For personal computers we need CCA. But on this work computer I have never had install that or any other program that I know of.

I just noticed today that I am able to access the UCI web pages but can't reach outside ones so it does sound like there may be some sort of university firewall problem. Do you know how I would check if this is the problem?

The only way to check would be to check with the uni's IT department. If you cant access outside pages, its probably a gateway issue.
