xp safe mode=black screen

trying to remove a virus. need to reboot into safe mode in xp to run program.
after an f8 on startup, I get into a black screen with the words" windows xp" and " safe mode". no mouse, no desktop, no way out. please help!

Is this after you selected safe mode?

yes, after I selected safe mode by F8 key at bootup.
