I figure the labor is pretty plug N play, but I don't know how to find a compatible hard drive for my specific PC or how I actually change it out with out loosing my operating system and all my programs...Should I just get a external and shell out the extra cash? Info, thoughts, and suggestions please..

This is pretty old to spend any money on.You can get a drive here.

You should not have any problems with a 160 gig drive. You may have problems trying to use a 250 gig or larger Drive because the bios may not be able to read that big of a drive. I would go ahead and buy Paragons Drive copy 9 and use it to install your Operating system onto the new drive. You may have a few problems with some of the Compaq software not working right But almost all will work properly. I did this on a compaq 1750 and had very few problems.

Problem is you will already have $90 into the computer with just these 2 items and the computer is not worth much more.

A second thought is you can justadd a larger HD to the computer and use XP to format the drive and a second drive. I do this quite often, using the second drive for all data, pictures, etc, and use the original drive only for the OS and programs. The computer will see the second drive easily.
