COMPUTER: DELL - XPS m1530/Vista 64bit

This is how it started.

1. Download the SubInACL tool from the Microsoft Web site. To do this,

follow these steps:

a. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:

http://www.microsoft...;displaylang=en

b. Click Download to download the SubInACL tool (SubInACL.exe).

c. When the download is finished, double-click the downloaded file to

install the tool.

d. The SubInACL tool is installed in the %programfiles(x86)%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools folder.

2. Use Notepad to create the Sub.bat file. To do this, follow these steps:

a. Click Start, click Run, type Notepad, and then press ENTER.

b. Copy and then paste (or type) the following text into Notepad:

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f

subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f

c. Click File, and then click Save As.

d. Copy and paste the following path and file name into the File name box: %programfiles (x86)%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools\sub.bat

e. Click Save.

3. Run the Sub.bat tool, and then restart your computer. To do this,

follow these steps:

a. Click Start, and then click Run.

b. Copy and then paste the following path and file name into the Open

box, and then click OK: %programfiles (x86)%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools\sub.bat

c. A Command Prompt window opens.

d. The tool runs for about 5 to 10 minutes or longer. Do not restart the

system at this point.

e. When the tool has finished running, the Command Prompt window closes

automatically.

f. Restart the computer, and then try to reinstall the OverDrive Media

Console.

I followed all of these steps. The original problem was with Overdrive Media Console---I use them for library audio books to download. Originally the error was with the ODM files. Then I rec'd this email from Overdrive. When I tried to adjust the registry issues to manually register the program, everything fell apart.

Now, I can't go back to a restore point and erase whatever stupid move I managed to make. I get the (0x8007000E) error when I try to to go back to a restore point.

When I try for installing/uninstalling anything, I get The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed.

I've screen capped both errors that I get, in case I missed something.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Tara

Hi,

Follow These Instructions to repair the Windows Installer Error

As for the (0x8007000E) error, how much RAM have you got installed on your system? also How much free hard drive space do you have?

I have 2G of RAM...and had no other programs open.

I'll try the windows installer error when I get home---I'm at work right now.
Thank you!

Ok,

have you got a Windows Disk?

We are going to scan your system for broken/ missing system files.

1 Click Start then select run , then press enter. A run window will open

2 type in cmd then press enter. Another window will open

3 type in sfc then press enter. Another window will open

4 type in sfc /scannow then press enter ( notice the space between the (sfc & /)

Now a scan will start , have your Windows XP disk ready. If your PC asks for the disc insert the CD into your CD Drive. When the scan is finished you will need to close the cd and all open windows , then remove the CD.

Then post back with the results.

I don't have XP---I have VISTA 64 Bit
Does this make a difference?

I attempted this anyway---with the space.
It did not work.

Oh sorry for that, I didn't edit my script properly to get rid of the XP part.

windows resource protection could not start repair service.

This happens if the TrustedInstaller (Windows Modules Installer) service is disabled. Use these steps to reset the service start-up type.

1. Click Start, type Services.msc

2. Double-click Windows Modules Installer

3. Set its Startup type to Manual

4. Click OK.

Then run sfc /scannow again

I went into it--it was already on manual.
I clicked start to make sure it was active.

SFC

still get this:

windows resource protection could not start repair service.

Hmm ok,

Do the same for the above for the Windows Installer (msiserver)service to.

Also make sure you are running an elevated cmd prompt by going:

Start, All Programs, Accessories, then right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.

Again try sfc.
These are just small ideas while i try and figure other points out, so don't worry if it doesn't work again.

Hi,

Ok we will try a few different options. I was going to say to run System restore from safe mode but it seems you have tried that on a different forum :)

Firstly click This Link

Follow through the steps for a repair. This wont effect your files however for the process of security backup your data before hand.

Now if it is unable to repair or do a system restore when you get to the system recovery options screen (Figure 9) select Command prompt. Then try running sfc from there and see what happens. It will hopefully run regardless of the system.

Yes, I did go over to the Vista boards. Sorry--it's just really killing me to have my system locked up like this.
I can't even update my iPod at this point.

*sigh*

Thanks for the tips---I'm going to go try them---I'll tell you what happens.

Haha its no problem, you do what you've got to do and I can see your pretty desperate.

Just to ask if they say to try something can you let me know so we don't offer the same possible failed advice and get you even more depressed and also if they say one thing and we say another and its not compatible then it may break something thanks :)

I'll wait for your reply that says its worked...I hope :)
