lost what program opens this

besides having a scattered mess, I have some files that even tho I am fimliar of which programs open "should" open them; some just flat out won't or they display symbols that Would prob make anyone nuts trying to decypher it. EXMPLE: i have one that has JPEG extention; but won't open with any programs that open .JPEG.
Any suggestions on how I can find out what some of these files contain. Some are photos and some I believe are YIM chats but can't open to find out what they are.. any help would be much appreciated < just wanting to find out what they are so I can either junk em or save em better....
