XP doesn`t connect to internet

I have a SonyVAIO laptop. Originally was working with Windows Vista Home, but we had so much problem, finally bought an XP SP3. After installation, the computer never been able to connect to the internet. Wlan switch is on, but no light on it anymore. Ethernet cable is plugged in, still no result.
At the end of the setup, the computer automatically set up the connection, result was ok, but still no connection.
I don`t know which way should I start in this case.
Anyone has an Idea, please help me!
