I have run adware se and spybot, and even bought Norton, but everytime Adware se removes something, back it comes... I am at my wits end.

I have done everything on the list except run ewido, I had work and school yestereday, and was unable to work on the problem. I may get a chance this evening. I will run everything again and ewido, and then post a new log. No need to apologize, you guys are wonderful, and I understand how busy you are from watching how fast new posts pop up. You have a mixture of infections that must be dealt with. Let’s get fixing and see if I can get this right in two or three hits.!

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

CWShredder (the download icon is on the right-hand side of the page)
CCleaner
Hoster

Now please install CWShredder, and run it. Click Check For Update, then Fix and then OK followed by Next, let it fix everything it asks about

Please run Hoster (just double click it to open). Choose the Restore Original Hosts button and press OK.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Close Windows Explorer and Reboot normally

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and also an Uninstall Log:

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click Save List (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

I set the view folders right, but was only able to find and delete one file:

There were two other files that were almost identical to the one I deleted?

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix will require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the Internet, or my instructions!

We are almost there now, just one little blighter to get. I was expecting to see an uninstall log; what happened to it? If this a multiple identity PC, I will need you to logon as each person and scan with HJT, sending the logs in your reply marked accordingly. Also please note that you should check that you have administrator rights.

Killbox by Option^Explicit

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*In the field labelled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file path listed below (EXACTLY as it appears, please double check to make sure!):

C:\windows\system32\elitewsr32.exe

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts. If you receive a message and your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

I ran the killbox as instructed, and it told me (after it said that it was verifying registry entries) that the entry had already been removed by some other program?

Also, I was wondering what you advice was to make my system run faster... It seems sluggish? Will what we are doing help? I havent gotten a pop up in a while, but it seems sluggish.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix will require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

Nearly there now. Just a couple of more things to do. Thanks for highlighting those two files that you found, I have researched them, and they will be going.

Please run Hoster (just double click it to open). Choose the Restore Original Hosts button and press OK.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please remove this entry from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel (if present):(click Start>Settings>Control Panel)

Viewpoint Media Player

Please open Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*In the field labelled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file paths listed below ONE AT A TIME (EXACTLY as it appears, please double check to make sure!):

C:\windows\system32\elitewrx32.exe

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the NO button. Do this after each one until you have entered the LAST file path I have listed above. After that LAST file path has been entered, press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts. If you receive a message and your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Now, I could write an essay on slow PC’s and all you would be is confused; it is a very complex subject. However, in the main, the more files you have in caches and the more security you have, the slower your PC will be.

Running CCleaner will help clear caches, but you can go to START>RUN and type in cleanmgr and press ENTER. Choose your drive (likely C) and let the PC calculate how much space you can save. Delete some or any or all, they are all resource hogs.

Similarly, you could check your temp folder by doing this. START>RUN and type in %temp% and press ENTER. Most of it should be gone, but feel free to delete the rest.

ok, I did as instructed.

again, I used HJT and fixed the two lines as instructed, then rebooted in safe mode, and deleted the Viewpoint Media Player. When I ran killbox, I listed the files exactly as they were written, and it told me that they were removed by an outside program?

I ran CCleaner, and Cleanmgr, and there was nothing in the %temp%.

How can I keep from getting infected again. I have run spybot and did the immunize thing, and now I have Norton Anti-virus, but if I dont have to pay for Ewido I would prefer not to.

Congratulations! your new log is clean. Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one.

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one spyware detector/prevention programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-Virus updated.

BTW, you are correct in your assumption that CCAPP.exe is part of Norton Antivirus.
