Thanks Troy, I take your advise about Raid 0. Reason I used it was I had 2 160g disks and therefore ended up with 320g by using Raid 0. And your comments on Linux disk I will take on board.
Regarding my problem. I eventually managed to get Acronis to clone my bad disk to an external h/d - cannot boot from this as it has inherited the problem with passwords. However, I can now see the files on the disk and can strip what I need from it.

Will post the outcome here.
