Came home to a blank screen, with the message, secondary master hard disc error.Press f4 to resume-reboot and select proper boot device.Is this repairable by software or is my hard drive fried.(probably a 2000 xp system)

Quick question is why is it trying to boot to the Secondary master and not to the primary drive?

No this is what was on the screen.Never had any problems in the past.Someone also mentioned something about an internal battery?

Most likely they are referencing the CMOS
It is located on the MOBO is looks like a Watch battery
Carefully take it out and leave it out for about 5 minutes. Then put it back in and try to boot the system.
This will force the bios into loading default settings and should allow the system to boot properly.
If not then you may have to replace the battery.

Sorry ,not that computer literate.im guessing your refering to the motherboard?Is there any way you could walk me through?
Thank you for your time just decided to crack open the tower and found the battery where could I get a replacement if I get no responce do you think its possible this could be the problem (sorry to bombard you with so many stupid questions)

it could be the battery is low or dead. This would cause the bios to do some strange things including changing the boot sequence.

If you need to replace the battery it is generally a CR2032 that can be found at just about any place that sells batteries.

pulled battery out of old tower that worked still get same also cmos/gpnv bad
get bios setup utility really dont know where to go from there

Have you looked in the bios to see what the Boot Sequence really is set up for?

To change Boot Sequence in your BIOS
Reboot the system and at the first post screen (where it is counting up memory) start tapping the DEL button
This will enter you into the Bios\Cmos area.
Find the Advanced area and click Enter
Look for Boot Sequence or Boot Options and highlight that click Enter
Now highlight the first drive and follow the directions on the bottom of the screen on how to modify it and change it to C or Main Drive.
Change the second drive to the CdRom
Once that is done then click F10 to Save and Exit
You will prompted to enter Y to verify Save and Exit. Click Y and the system will now reboot with the new settings.

under boot: plug&play o/s and numlock

OK it may be different on your bios.
Look through each of the sections and see if you can find the Boot Sequence
Please do not change any settings unless you let me know first.

This was under Bios setup utility.I tried tapping del(next to 0 on small # keypad?), nothing seemed to happen.Cant find anything for what your saying.

Here is the problem.
Change it so that
First Boot Device is your Main Hard Drive
2nd boot device is CdRom (Unless you have floppy disk for your bootable media)
Once set then make sure you Save and Exit


The current state does not even allow for the main drive to be seen
