My Laptop does not start up anymore. It does not even get to the screen where the XP logo appears. There seems to be a motherboard failure. The model is Sony Vaio PCG FX705. I would either be looking to install a new board if i could find one in the UK or to access the data that is on its hard drive using another pc. I know you can get a cable to use with a usb port, but are there certain settings for the hard disk before i can view its contents.

Thanks

Hi
You can get a USB cable that allows data transfer between 2 computers but this isn't much use if the laptop won't boot. Your best bet is a USB 2.5inch drive caddy. You just pop the laptop hard drive into it & connect it to a PC via the USB port. The link below is for one on an English website. You won't need to configure the drive at all but there might be a driver that you need to load onto the PC.
