I am asking this here because I love this forum and feel someone might be able to help me before I jump into the abyss tomorrow. My PS3 freezes when I play games. This happens during CoD:WAW and GTA IV. The system plays for a few minutes before it happens. The system becomes much more reactive once the disk is ejected and eventually either can turn off or reset via the front buttons.
I have the 80 gig MotorStorm bundle. I noticed the problem last night playing WAW, unplugged and left overnight, played WAW for half hour and it worked fine, then came back a few hours later and played 5 mins of GTA IV when the problem occurred again, and testing shows it keeps on happening.
My thoughts:
Originally I thought (and still kindof do) it might be a laser issue. My PS2 back in the day stopped reading burned DVDs and eventually all DVDs and this was fixed by opening it up and cleaning the laser. The reason I think it is not the laser is because it appears to read the disks just fine, it only freezes after a few minutes of play.
Logically, my thoughts lead me to think it could be an overheating issue. The PS3 did sit on top of my cable box, but that doesn't seem to contribute a lot of heat. Anyway, I moved it and the problem still occurs. I will buy a blow cleaner for the fans/vents however I do not think that this will solve the problem.
The disk seems to be in very good condition. There are a few finger prints toward the center and edge of the disk, but I've had the machine for almost 2 years and have never had my system freeze on me. Never!
I won the PS3 in a guitar hero competition, so there is no retail warranty and the manufacturer warranty, although certainly expired, will be useless without an original receipt.
Has anyone else come across this problem or do you have any suggestions? I have the 'Repair Guide' which will not really help much and doesn't reference my problem.
Thank you very much and, if nothing else, wish me luck opening up the machine
