Hi,

I have unfortunately encountered the smitfraud problem. This happened a couple of days ago, when the internet close itself and I got the blue screen/smitfraid message. I had however been encountering problems before that, with the computer only starting up properly once every 5 or 6 times (mainly just freezing before I get to log in) for a few weeks. So I don't know whether I have more than 1 virus or trojan, or this Smitfraud has been sitting around for a while.

I have been through all your processes to do before going through hi-jack this, but the computer is now so slow I am having some problems - I have downloaded and run spybot search and destroy, done the free on line scan, used my norton anti-virus scan (though this isn't updated - I didn't want to

Hi Gavin25

Welcome to GTG! :tazz:

Please do this:

First create a permanent folder somewhere like in My Documents and name it Hijack This.

Now Click here to download Hijack This. Download it and click "Save". Save it to the Hijack This folder you just created.

Click on Hijackthis.exe to launch the program. Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log. Click "Save" to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.

Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Many thanks for your swift response. I did actually do this already - looks like some of my post went missing somehow.

The end of my previous post siad I have run the anti trojan TDS3 software but couldn't get the Windows update SP1a for some reason.

Anyway - Hijack log below.

Many thanks again,

Gavin

Hi,

Thanks again for your help.

I have done all this and I think it is running a bit smoother now but still I get the same problems at start up - I get a frozen hourglass etc 3 times out of four and have to turn the computer off by hand and start again.

Boot to safe mode and use killbox to delete these files:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\cd_clint.dll
C:\WINDOWS\GatorPatch.log

Delete these folders:

C:\Program Files\kazaa
C:\Program Files\MyWay
C:\Program Files\PerfectNav
C:\Program Files\kazaa
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\P2P Networking
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Gain Publishing
C:\Documents and Settings\Gavin\Start Menu\Programs\Altnet

Go here and download Ad-Aware SE.

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.

Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.

Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Restart your computer.

Go here and download Microsoft Antispyware Beta. First in the top menu click File then Check for updates to download the definitons updates.

After updating look in the right side of the main window under "Run Quick Scan Now" and click Spyware scan options. In that window put a tick by Run a full system scan and then put a check by all three options below that then click Run Scan now.

When the scan is finished, let it fix anything that it finds (have it quarantine the items that have that option rather than delete just in case. It is a beta program and there may be false positives)

Restart your computer.

Here are some routine maintenance practices that you should do on a regular basis to keep your machine running efficienly:

Disk Cleanup:

http://www.theelderg...nup_utility.htm

Defrag your HD:

http://artsweb.bham....rag-win2kxp.htm

Run chkdsk:

To use Chkdsk, click Start and My Computer. Right-click the hard drive you want to check, and click Properties. Select the Tools tab and click Check Now. Check both boxes. Click Start. You'll get a message that the computer must be rebooted to run a complete check. Click Yes and reboot. Chkdsk will take awhile, so run it when you don't need to use the computer for something else.

Remove unnecessary startups

This should be done through the System Configuration Utility. Go to Start > Run and type in msconfig.
Click OK or hit the Enter key.

Click on the "Startup" tab and remove the check by these:

NvCplDaemon
DVDSentry
CTDVDDet
RealTray
AdaptecDirectCD
kX Mixer
iTunesHelper
QuickTime Task

Click "Apply" then "Close"

You will be prompted to restart. Go ahead and restart.

Upon restart you will be confronted with a dialogue box warning about running in selective startup. Just ignore that message and put a check in the box by "Don't show me this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" and click "OK". You will not be bothered by the message again.

Keep in mind that some entries will be re-enabled in the startups each time you use that particular program. Therefore, you will have to find the option in that programs preferences that says something like "Load with Windows" or "Run when Windows Starts" and disable that option.

Go here for info on msconfig:

http://www.pacs-port...artup_index.htm

You can look up the startups here to help determine what is needed and what is not:

http://computercops....tartupList.html

here:

http://www.answersth...es/tasklist.htm

And here:

Thanks again for your help. Can I just confirm before I do all this that when you say:

this won't stop any of these programmes from running properly? I assume it means that they just won't automatically run at start up. Just that I definitely need KX Mixer running properly.

Thanks

That is correct. This will only stop them from running at startup. They will still run properly and you can start them manually when you need them. There is no reason they should run all the time using up resources.

Sorry about the delay - been away for a couple of weeks. However, I have now done everything you instructed but still having no luck. The PC still will only start (get through the log in phase without freezing) about 1 in 5 times.

I'm not sure I have successfully got rid of all the dodgy files...I now have about 10 spyware/adaware/anti-virus systems downloaded on to the desktop but am not quite sure everything has worked as it should!

Thanks for your patience - please can you take another look and see if I have missed anything from my hjt log?

Many thanks again,

Gavin

Go here and do an online virus scan.

When the scan is finished, anything that it cannot clean have it delete it. Make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be deleted so you can delete it yourself.

Run ActiveScan online virus scan here

When the scan is finished, anything that it cannot clean have it delete it. Make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be deleted so you can delete it yourself.
- Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan
