compaq start up issues

i have a compaq presario f700 laptop just out of warranty. in the past week, it has failed alternately to find my hard drive and my windows profile when i turned it on, but was fine if i restarted it. now, when i try to turn it on, the power button lights up like normal and then goes dark again and nothing happens. i finally got it to turn on normally, but now i dont want to turn it off again. any help would be appreciated.
