hey,

this computer was working fine for 2 yrs (ive formatted a couple of times but my last format was probably 5 months ago) and out of the blue this started happening so i chcked bios

this comp is xp pro btw

bios doesnt detect my hard drives in ide primary/secondary
i have two hard drives,
what comes up there in those ide primary slot in bios instead is, my cdr and dvd drives..

my computer doesnt go to the desktop screen,
after boot it will load to the screen where you type your password
and after i hit enter,
it just sticks there with the password window gone, and just the background stuck there forever

i tried formatting but my cd /dvd drive doesnt read my CD.. even though my dvd drive is boot priority one
and ive tried replugging the harddrives..
i have 2 hard drives..

also tried installing vista from bootup, it worked, but then during installation there was an error with a corrupt file???

cheers for any help at all

I am confused as how

bios doesnt detect my hard drives in ide primary/secondary

, but

also tried installing vista from bootup, it worked, but then during installation there was an error with a corrupt file??

.

If the drives are not detected in bios, they aren't there to install Vista.
Lets start by resetting bios to default.
Not knowing your bios, there is a spot in bios to "reset to defaults", or
Use the jumper on the main board (if available), or
Pull the main board battery.

Is there more then one HD in the system on the same IDE?
Are they setup for Master and Slave correctly?
Where did Vista come from since you said originally the system had XP Pro installed?

i've tried resetting BIOS configuration to default and the message comes up on boot "NTLDR is missing."
the reason I tried Vista is because my XP cd wasn't being read no matter what I tried, and when I put the Vista cd in it worked.
thanks

So where do we stand now?
Are you still wanting XP to run?, or
Are you wanting Vista to run?

Or is it fixed?
