I guess i kind of got used to it but I have black vertical bands on my screen. It does change a bit when I change resolutions but the band is still large. I'm wondering if this is a gpu problem and if simply getting a new graphics card would change this?

Do the lines appear when you use a different input? If not, then yes your vid card is probably bad. If it happens with every input, then your TV is the issue.

Playing games, watching tv, no black bands. I think your right its the gpu but when I get my new computer I'll be using another gpu. Hopefully that supports widescreen resolutions.
