Once the disk is wiped, you should be able to use the install disks to reinstall the OS. It should partition and create the filesystem. Some companies provide disks which put the system back to the way it was when it was shipped. Others, provide Windoze disks and so it might not have all information what was provided with the machine.

You will need a disk to reformat the harddrive. You can use the install disks or you can use other programs/utilities like Knoppix Live CD. But, reformatting the disk will not do you much good if you don't have the means of re-installing the OS.

You asked how to wipe your disk to military standards, which is what DBAN can do. You can create a floppy or a CD and boot that and wipe out the system. There is a support/help forum on the link to DBAN.

If you run the program, you will need to reload the OS afterwards, if you want to use the computer again. It is good to run if you are going to get rid of the disk/computer.
