External monitor and laptop - Help Please -

I am trying to get an external monitor (that works fine with other laptops) to work with a Lenovo x300.

It appears to me to be a driver thing but I have updated those.

When I use Fn+F7 to toggle I get a dark monitor; power is on, the gren light on the monitor is on. The only thing I see is a message sporadically flashing that that indicates ""1: Analog Input Cannot displya in this mode".

I know this is not rocket science here; What am I doing wrong????
