Win XP Blinking Underscore and not installed yet

while trying to install win xp on boot camp partition on my mac, inserted the install cd only to find the black underscore
xp is not yet installed. so no bios check.
i think its something to do with the HD, it is an SSD, and it has a mac osx partition on it.
any suggestions?
