A few days ago I got some kind of virus on my laptop and was advised to reformat it. I started the process but I am now unable to reinstall it because the laptop keeps switching itself off before I can complete installation. (It has been switching itself off at random for a while but is now making the computer unusable). As far as I can tell there is no problem with the power supply.

What model laptop?

Maybe overheating. Check the fan to make sure running, clear of any dust debris.
