It sounds like you are using RAID instead of backups. This is absolutely wrong, you must always have a separate backup solution in place as well, unless the data is not important to keep.

If you are able to boot into the computer at all (using the IDE mode is fine), then there are a number of tools that will allow you to audit the machine and it will give you a small profile with the license keys used. I personally find Belarc does the job nicely. However, the key should be printed on a small sticker which should be attached to the machine, this is part of the Microsoft license agreement. The license states that a genuine disc and license sticker must be together to be used as per the license agreement. If the company who built it didn't put a sticker on and you paid them for a genuine Microsoft license key, then they are accountable - not helpful if they are bankrupt, as you say. I have a feeling you may need to purchase a new license, which will come with a disc which you can use to repair the installation.

A simple repair install off the XP installation disc is easy to achieve and you must explicitly tell it to delete all the data and start fresh if that's what you want it to do. If you don't want it to delete the data, then don't select those options. One should always be careful when using a computer and read the options when presented, no matter what program a user is using.

Well Well Well.... Isnt this just fantastic?!

Do we know or have an idea what the problem is? The windows disk sounds alot like a "fix all" Last solution kinda thing...

If I understand correctly.. RAID is a hardware method and is currently not an option.
Any software programs that cane mirror my drive?

Yes or no?

I don't see how this is fantastic anywhere. You are clearly having a problem and don't seem to be accepting the fact that I am volunteering my time to give you a solution for your problem. I am not here to argue with you or tell you something you don't need to know.

I don't think the Windows disc is a "fix all" last solution... I often go straight for it as a first solution here in the tech shop where I work if I know it will fix the problem.

Yes, you can mirror the drive by making an image of it, there are many programs that can mirror the drive and you would need one where you can enable the option to make a sector copy, which would get it exactly the same across the whole drive. But then once you have completed that and re-enabled RAID you would end up with two drives exactly the same, so when you try and boot off the RAID array it will give you the same error upon boot so I don't feel it would achieve anything. I am going to say it one more time: the only way I can see out of this is to enable RAID in the BIOS, rebuild the RAID array, and then repair install with a Windows installation disc so that it fixes the drivers and boots off the RAID array.

I am sorry I did not mean to be offencive.
I accept that you are not just trying but doing a great job at helping me. I am saying that while I have confidence in your resolution to this problem I lack the tools required to do it at this time and would like an alternative.

I have no intention of useing my RAID array until I first do your solution.

However you mention a immaging program that can copy entire sectors and make it as though my second drive is a complete identicle copy.. I would like to do that as a precaution just in case I dont get to fix the raid array problem with your solution before I expirience a failure of my drive.

No problem, I understand problems can be rather frustrating sometimes.

It sounds like your best option is to run proper backups to an external hard drive, I say this because RAID is not intended to replace backups. So even though you aren't in RAID mode at the moment, you still need separate backups anyway. I definitely agree that you don't want to lose any data.

So if you are going to use the second drive for backups, then any backup software will do. There are a number of free versions that allow you to make an image. I then advise to remove the drive from the machine until you want to run the next backup, then plug it back in, run the backup, and remove it again.

Does that make sense? What is the make of your hard drives and I will find a good program for you to use.

I still can't shake the feeling that there is still maleware or something on my pc... I mean by second drive on which svhost crashes shortly after boot loads to desktop in less then 3 seconds but my main drive loads to desktop in like 2mins..

anyway

WDC WD3200AAJS-00B4A0 <--- My main drive C
WDC WD3200AAJS-22B4A0 <--- My used to be mirror back up drive.

Now listen this may not mean anything or not but... The kinds of anomolys and errors I encounter lead me to think that I am still infected with something even though I got a clean bill of health with the tools here.

Here are some strange things and you can tell me what you think..

In the services menu for msconfig the F-secure procceses have the manufacturer listed as "unknown" instead of "F-secure corporation"

When playing world of warcraft if I dare use google chrome while playing wow I get strange 1-2 min computer hangs and then after ward wow have rainbow graphical texture distortions. Sometimes I even crash and a rectanguler area appears at the top left of my screen with a bunch of boxxy artifacts that move when i move my mouse but the remainder of the screen does not change. I have to hard crash for this to go away.

I noticed that whilest useing facebook chat I constantly fail to send messeges when I have windows live messenger open at the same time.

Also while f-secure detects absolutly nothing wrong with my system the second I disable the firewall and protection for it I get pounded in the rear with a multitude of bizzare and almost satiricle problems.

Also Running zune and wow at the same time is a bad move because if about 40% of the time it causes a me to lagg really bad..

Everything I have run says Im clean as can be... Yet I still I think they should make a house episode about my computer because thats the level of rarity and sophisitcation of whatever is wrong with my computer.

I ask that you please point me in the direction of a software that looks for incompatibilities or conflictions in memory.

Oh I forgot to mention that after 3 hrs on the phone the crucial people told me they have no idea why my pc will only utilise 2gigs of ram when I have 4.. IT should cap at 3... and when in bios it says that 4 gigs is available.. So yeah just another strange thing...

It sounds like there are a number of issues with the PC. Unfortunately I see it a lot of the time, when the viruses are cleaned up, weird problems can occur. Half the time they are easily fixed with sfc /scannow, chkdsk /r, and/or a repair install, the other half I'm going in for advanced repairs, a small percentage of which I am unable to repair it and need to format/reinstall. There's currently a Vista machine on my workbench right now, after removing some viruses I am left with an unbootable system, it starts up and BSODs with "Unmountable Boot Volume", and nothing I try can even find the Vista install to run repairs on it... :)

While it may be fixable, I really think one of your best options would be to completely back up all of your user data to a separate backup drive and then fix it properly with a fresh install on the RAID. I always hate going for a reformat but sometimes it's the best option, I think I'm going to recommend it in this instance.

...

Can you at least point me in the right direction to a backup program that works with my drives? Like we discussed before?

Sorry, I was just musing a bit...

Western Digital have an agreement with Acronis, so you can use a free version in that link.

Thanks..

I must ask through do you have any idea what would cause these strange symptoms? I mean even if a recovery console would fix it that still dosent tell me what was broken to begin with. Sometimes I just wish fixing computers was like an episode of House MD where its always a super rare case like mine and it ends up being something nobody expected.

I mean if F-secure has an Unknown manufacturere what would that mean? Like in my services menu and my startup menu in ms config which I check every time I boot.

What would cause the startup process and wait tim for desktop to load to take almost 1 min and a half, if nothing new or unuseual is in the startup menu?

Because I intend to go into this field of study it is curious and important to me that I at least know a way (no matter how tedious) to trouble shoot on an extreamly sophisticated level to the point where if time was no object I could surgically fix anything without the help of recovery and combofix and what not. I was able to do that with windows 98 but when I got XP... everything changed.

After re-reading through this thread, I cannot see a list of your specs. Can you please list all parts in your machine?

Do you want my .nfo file? Its rather huge.

Also The software you gave me said the in order to complete to backup process I will need to disconnect one of my hard drives.. I forget if they mean the source or the destination one.. why do they say that and do I really have to open my pc up again in order for the backup to be successfull.

Edit:

I also want to know how I can be 100% sure what RAID/SCSI/Unsupported UDMA drivers I am useing and if updateing, repairing or replaceing them will possibly fix my problem. I will need to know them anyway if I go through with the recovery console plan you have for me.

Sorry mate, I didn't respond to this one.

As it is a complete exact image, the idea is to then remove one of the hard drives and store it away. Then in case of disaster, you can put that drive back in the machine and continue on.

As you are using on board RAID on a P965/G965 chipset motherboard, you will need to find out the exact make/model of the motherboard. You can then find out the RAID drivers from the manufacturer's website for your motherboard.

Also I don't have a "recovery console" plan for you, I am suggesting a repair install as that's where you specify RAID drivers, this is the only way it will pick it up once again.

Hypothetical question..

If I upgrade to vista and then to windows 7, keeping all my data will my computer problem be fixed? Because the old OS files will get overidden right? so anything that was missing or damaged would be fixed in the new os.?

Right?

I am going to strongly suggest you don't go down that path. You might as well go straight for a fresh install of Windows 7, so backup your data first and then restore it into the new installation.
