Need to restore function with history on websites

That topic title doesn't make much sense, but I used to be able to go to a website - imdb.com - and if I wanted to search for something, it would retain past searches in the history but now I have to retype the entir word or name. Other sites are OK. I am not at all certain how to restore this.
