Windows refuses to read my mic

I thought I had this same problem in the game COD WaW on my vista HDD but its just in and out usually worked if I had it plugged in before I launched the game.But now I am using XP and no programs what so ever will read my mic I tried audacity or camtasia or my games and nothing seemed to work so any ideas?

Also when I try to record sound in game via fraps there is no sound just video on a earlier post while trying to get my modem working the sound bus's were not working properly that may to blame but please help
