FYI. Microsoft proposes some elaborate solutions to this problem. I solved this problem on windows NT 4.0 SP 6 by using the chkdsk /r program within the windows XP recovery program on the windows XP software disc. Very easy and quick solution. Boot the recovery program until you get the command prompt. At the command prompt you can run any number of the standard DOS utilities. In this case you want to run the chkdsk program with the /r option.
