Hi, About 4 days ago it started after i did the latest XP updates. First IE8 kept freezing. I undid that KB (compatibility). Still kept freezing. Went back 2 restore points. Still freezing on explorer.exe. System kind of hangs up after about 5 mins. I used the XP Cd, expanded explorer.exe and copied it into the Windows folder hoping for the best. NO luck. Just hangs on me. I did a Virus Scan (AVG9 - found nothing). I also ran Spybot S&D with the latest descriptions (nothing came up). USed CCleaner (also cleaned registry). Still nothing.

I've had to reboot (power off) so frequently I'm now scared i'll crash the HDD. Please help. Thanks.
I've far too much stuff on it to have to rebuild it from scratch. :)

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

Click on Startup tab.
Click Disable all
IMPORTANT! In case of laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries.

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

Same problem?

Uninstalled Comodo. Turned on Windows F/wall. My services which were disabled from MSconffig are still disabled. Ran without crashing but my DVD drive kept opening/closing many many times.

I then enabled all startup items/servvices which i had disabled and rebooted. Started up again. Drive opened/closed a few times. And then kept doing that every couple of minutes. System stays up. Drive keeps popping open and stays open...
Opened Event Viewer. Kept seeing 4 errors in the system logs
1 - the foll. boot-start or system-start driver/s failed to load: NVTCP - Event ID: 7026
2 - The SessionLauncher service failed to start due to the foll error: The system cannot find the path specified - Event ID: 7000
3 - The dldoCAT CustConnectService failed to start due to the foll error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion - Event ID: 7000
4 - Timeout (30000 ms) waiting for the dldoCAT CustConnectService to connect. Event ID: 7009

Ran a full scan of AVG. Found a virus Proxy in a System Restore file. Healed.

Hi, everything seems ok now, with the exception of the dvd drive opening and closing quite regularly. After you start up or come out of standby, it does that for like 50 times ??? Any suggestions what might be causing it...Thanks

dvd drive opening and closing quite regularly

I'm not sure here, but it happened to me once and the drive died shortly after.
