Hmmm sounds like a boot loop.
Can you get to the Advance Boot Menu and click on Last Known Good Configuration That Worked?
If that doesn't do it then try Safe Mode
If that doesn't work do you have a Genuine Xp disk? We can try to run chkdsk /r from the Recovery Console

The 2 gig almost seems like a bad stick of memory.
It happens and there is no way to know unless the system will boot with it in.
Then you could run the memtest program on it and make sure.

A little warm is normal but hot is not.
If it burns your fingers then that is not good.

I think you have just gotten a faulty stick of memory. You should be able to get a RMA on the memory and a replacement for it. I don't know where you purchased it but most of the time the company will send you a rma sticker to affix to the package. This will save you the money of returning it.
If you bought it from NewEgg or Tigerdirect then contact them and they are really good about taking care of their customers.

Did you ask them about the compatibility of the memory with your system?
I don't see how it would be a issue as crucial says it is the right type for your system. The only logical explanation is that the memory is faulty.
