Photo 966 printer won't print (Vista OS)

I need help in resolving why my printer won't print. The printer is a Dell Photo 966 with OS Vista. Initially, I tried to download Adobe 9, and shortly thereafter, my printer would not print. When trying to print, I receive the error message "Communication Not Available." I've checked the usual in terms of connections being in place. On occassion, when I power it on, a print job from the day before will print. Or, the same thing occurs at random later on in the day. Where do I start in diagnosing what to do? Thanks.
