Hey everyone,
My tale of woe: I was trying to free up some space on my hp laptop. Unbeknownst to me, the boot manager was compressed in the process, so I got an error message when I turned on the laptop ("boot manager compressed, press ctrl-alt-delete to restart). After doing some research on the net, I found a suggestion to fix the problem via the command prompt (something like "bootmanager\fixrecvmanager" or something like that). It took me forever to find my way to the command prompt via the Recovery Manager, but it seemed to work. Except now instead of getting stuck at the "boot manager compressed" screen, the laptop loads files and then goes directly to the Recovery Manager. And no matter what I do, I can't get out the Recovery Manager. Even when I "finish" the Recovery Manager, the computer restarts and goes right back to the Recovery Manager.

Please help. This is driving me crazy. Btw, I can follow basic instructions, but I'm not very computer proficient. Thanks so much for any help you can offer.

No ideas yet, huh? Maybe a little more info will trigger some responses. I noticed that a blue screen comes up right before Windows is about to start up and that's when the computer reverts to the Recovery Manager.

Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hello richfreire...

As the machine is starting, tap the F8 key and see if you can access the Advanced Boot Options screen. If you can, use the arrow keys to select "Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure" and press Enter.

This should allow the blue screen error to stay on screen so you can gather the information it's trying to provide. Please post the stop code information and any file names that might be displayed on the BSOD.

Thanks so much for responding. I did what you suggested, but I didn't see the error code on the blue screen and the computer still goes straight to Recovery Manager.

Now that you showed me how to get into the Advanced Boot Options menu, should I try to start the comp on safe mode? Will that help me access other possible solutions?

You can certainly try Safe Mode. You might try "Last known good configuration", too.

okay, I'm trying the last known good configuration.... Well, that didn't work. I'm gonna try safe mode now instead.

that didn't work either. Even in safe mode, the comp reverts to recovery manager.
