OS - Seems I may have jumped the gun a bit. Computer stayed on all night without issue - not a normal thing. Usually I wake up to the blue screen. not the case today. However, I did plug in my iTouch and began working on an Excel file when the screen of death came back. Couple of things, could this be related to my iTouch? or could it be related to my microsoft office 2007 software - I just found out the version I have is not an authorized version from Microsoft. My bad. I will be replacing with authorized version immediately.

Hey biff,

Hmmm... could you send me the most recent Minidmp for analysis? I just want to be sure nothing's changed on the crash.

Also, yes, please remove any software which is not authentic. It's unlikely that is what is causing this, but anything is possible.

Thanks,

~os

Download BlueScreenView
No installation required.
Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

Thanks to Broni for the instructions and program

Almost everyone of your crashes is due to ntkrnlpa.exe which is part of the Vista os system. This can be caused by a faulty driver, bad memory or a hard drive issue. I guess this is going to be the hard way then. :) Please do the following and let us know the results.

If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.

NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option A

B. If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest...

1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)
2. Unzip downloaded memtest86+-2.11.iso.zip file.
3. Inside, you'll find memtest86+-2.11.iso file.
4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/
5. Insert blank CD into your CD drive.
6. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc
7. Click on Browse for a file... icon:

Posted Image

8. Locate memtest86+-2.11.iso file, and click Open button.
9. Click on ImgBurn green arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD:

Posted Image

10. Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start to run.

The running program will look something like this depending on the size and number of ram modules installed:

Posted Image

It's recommended to run 5-6 passes. Each pass contains very same 8 tests.

This will show the progress of the test. It can take a while. Be patient, or leave it running overnight.

The following image is the test results area:

The most important item here is the “errors” line. If you see ANY errors, even one, most likely, you have bad RAM.

rshaffer61 - I like option A vs. B as you might expect. Here is my not so bright question of the day - how do I locate the number of rams and what is RAM stick?

I should note, I had the hard drive replaced with a Seagate Barracuda (SATA). Size 1 TB. When I go to control panel and pull up system I see Memory (RAM) is 1.00 GB. This seemed unusual to me. Thought it should read Memory (RAM)1 TB.

Motherboard Pic Look at the yellow and black slots on the top right corner. These are the memory slots. Yours may be a different color

rshaffer61 - My slots are blue in color. How appropriate. I have 4 slots total, two of which are occupied. The 2 currently occupied are, from left to right, slots 1 and 2. Would you please walk me through the steps you would like me to take. Believe I shut down computer, remove memory from slot 1 and restart. Do the same for slot 2. Is that correct? Again, what am I looking for throughout the process? Thanks

rshaffer61 - removed ram module from slot 1. One thing I noticed is a tremendous slow down in my computer speed. What else should I be looking for? Another blue screen? when should I shut down and remove ram module in slot 2? Thanks again Biff74

Yes with one stick do you get the blue screen?
System slow is normal with less memory no problem there.

rshaffer61 - no blue screen. However, I have said that before. Assuming the memory module is the issue, would you suggest replacing both? If so, the current modules are 512 MB DDR. What would you suggest I step up to? According to HP, it appears I can jump up to 4 GB (1 GB / slot)Not sure I need to do that. what you think?

I suspect you have Vista 32 bit correct? If so you will only be able to utilize 3.5 gigs of memory.
