Yep that tells me the dvd's are good since they work in any other system but the drive itself has just lost the dvd read part of it. The drive can still read cd's with no problem correct?

OK one other step you can try. Remove the drive from the laptop and then reinstall it. Sometimes the connections might get dirty causing it not to function correctly.

Not that hard honestly. There should be a screw or two that holds it in place or there is a tab to push that releases it.
HP has the instructions for it HERE

Are you still having problems with your issue?
It has been 15 days since your last response and I was wondering if the issue has been resolved?
If so can you explain how it was resolved so others may be able to fix it if they have the same issue.
If not please let us know and we can continue with helping you to resolve the issue.
