winxp gets to login and then logs off

I have Dell insprion 6400 and like some other threads I ahve the same problem it gets me to the login screen then it logs me off, I have tried repairng WINXP but like other threads I do not have an Administrative password. I do have a valid XP disk from my work, When I start the laptop up from the cd\dvd it says that it is not a bootable disk.
It does work as an external drive on my PC.
