i recently got an IM with a link that i shouldn't have clicked on. i think it eventually sent that same link to everyone on my buddy list. i'm not sure, but after some research, i believe a file named "svhost.exe" was part of the problem. after following the procedures outlined in this forum, i see entries in the HijackThis logfile for "svchost.exe" but not "svhost.exe"...am i ok now? please look at the following logfile. is there anything else in the following logfile that looks suspicious? thank you for your help.

I cannot see anything suspicious on your log, but clicking through on IM links can be unwise and lead to infection. You mentioned a file named Svhost.exe. This malicious file can be easily confused with Svchost.exe which is legitimate, so if you only saw the file name for a second, it is entirely possible that you have misread the name. That said though, for your owm peace of mind, I would suggest the foolowing actions.

Please install, update, configure, and run Ad-aware and Spybot S&D as below:
Make sure you're using the latest version of Ad-aware(Ad-aware SE 1.05) If you're using an older version, download Ad-aware SE Personal 1.05 and install it.

Before scanning with Ad-aware SE Free:
Run a FULL adaware scan using the following configuration below

• Update
  • Select Check for updates.
  • Then Connect to download and install the latest updates .
• Click Start
• Select Perform Full System Scan and hit Next to let Ad-Aware scan your drives.
• It will list malware files and registry keys. Click Next.
• Under the Critical Objects tab, rightclick in the list, choose Select All, then Next.
• It will ask for verification of checked items-. Choose OK.
• Close Ad-Aware, Shut down and reboot your system.

Scanning in Spybot Search and Destroy:

1. Download and Install Spybot S&D, accepting the Default Settings
(Please ensure you have version 1.3 final.)

2. Go to Start > Programs >Spybot Search & Destroy and choose 'Spybot S&D'

3. Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D

6. When Spybot is complete, it will be showing 'RED' (RED) entries BLACK entries and GREEN (GREEN) entries in the window

7. Make sure there is a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.

8. Choose Fix Selected Problems and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

9. REBOOT

Also, run at least 2 of these online virus scans:

Housecall<<<Put on 'Autoclean' and delete what it can't clean.
Panda ActiveScan<<<Accept default settings, save and post the log
RAV online scan<<<Add a check by 'Autoclean', leave everything else as is.
eTrust Antivirus Web Scan<<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful
Bitdefender ScanOnline<<<Place a check by everything under 'Scan Options'.
Command on Demand

Also run an online trojan scan here: http://www.trojanscan.com/
Reboot when finished.

Re-run HijackThis and post the new log.

ukbiker...thank you for your response. the reason i am not posting another hijackthis log is because i have already done the above recommendations. the file svhost.exe (NOT svchost.exe) was on my computer, which i manually deleted in my registry. i knew this file was related to the link i clicked on because svhost.exe tried to gain access to the internet through zonealarm. after deleting all of them, i ran the programs you mentioned and came up with nothing. i have been manually checking each file in my hijackthis log to see if they are malicious, but haven't come up with anything, so i think i am ok. i am no expert at this, so i wanted someone to throughly look through my log to double check this. i really appreciate your help ukbiker.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:

• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:

• AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
• Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
• More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
