how do i change file type icons Manually with regedit

i am no stranger to manually changine file type entries in xp but vista is rather new to me and i would rather not mess around in the registry until someone tells me a little more about the structure of vista but primarily i just want to know how to asociate files with seperate icons withought needing a third party application
