Sorry about the log - I hoped it would help.
I'll try safe mode.
When I try to start IE, I get the message cannot connect to Internet, click here to diagnose problem. I did and that's where I got the message about probably being blocked by a firewall.

Also, do you use router?
Then...
1. Click Start>Run (Start>"Start search" in Vista).
2. Type in (or copy and paste):
cmd /c ping google.com>%temp%\$.$¬epad %temp%\$.$
and press Enter.
3. Notepad will open.
4. Copy all text in Notepad ([Ctrl-A], then [Ctrl-C]), and then post it (paste = [Ctrl-V]) in your next reply.

Tried safe mode - still can't get on. Network Diagnostics for Windows XP still says it is probably caused by firewall settings.

Again, do you use router?
It looks like you have partial connection (50% loss).
Did you run that command from normal mode, or safe mode with networking?
Try very same command, replacing google.com with 209.85.171.99
Post results.

Yes, I use a router. I was in safe mode when I tried the last item. I just rebooted in normal mode and will try the new command. Let me know if I should go back to safe mode. Thanks

I want you to try both commands in both modes, so try both in normal mode and then go back to safe with networking and try numeric (209.85.171.99) address.
After that, turn everything off, hook up computer straight to the modem (bypassing router) and try the very same things.
