Thanks,
Rolf55

Hi, Rolf55, and welcome to Geeks To Go. My name is Sim and I will be helping you out with your computer.

However, as I am still an apprentice, my posts have to be vetted and approved by a qualified malware staff. There will be an inevitable time lag and I seek your understanding in this matter. Thank you.

I am currently reviewing your logs and will reply shortly.

Hi Rolf55,

Please download GooredFix from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Ensure all Firefox windows are closed.
  • To run the tool, double-click it (XP), or right-click and select Run As Administrator (Vista).
  • When prompted to run the scan, click Yes.
  • GooredFix will check for infections, and then a log will appear. Please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredFix.txt).

Next

Using Internet Explorer:

Open "tools" in the menu bar
Click "Manage Add-ons
Click "Fast Browser Search" and disable it.

Now go to your control panel.
Click "Add or remove program"

You should now be able to select the "Fast Browser search protection", and uninstall it.

Restart your computer.

Now go back to control panel, and uninstall "Fast Browser Search (MyTattoo)"

Next

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

Hi Rolf55,

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner. Unzip it to your Desktop.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any
"<--- ROOKIT" entries unless advised!

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.
  • Click NO
  • In the right panel, you will see a bunch of boxes that have been checked ... leave everything checked and ensure the Show all box is un-checked.
  • Now click the Scan button.
Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
  • Click OK.
  • GMER will produce a log. Click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "GMER.txt"
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
Post the contents of GMER.txt in your next reply.

Next

Download OTS to your Desktop
  • Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  • Double-click on OTS.exe to start the program.
  • Check the box that says Scan All Users
  • Under Additional Scans check the following:
    • File - Lop Check
    • File - Purity Scan
    • Evnt - EvtViewer (last 10)
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Please attach the log in your next post.

To attach a file, do the following:
  • Click Add Reply
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box

Gmer keeps crashing: "gmer.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I have made sure all programs including antivirus are off but still keeps crashing.

Hi Rolf55,

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Hi Rolf55,

Sorry for not telling you earlier. Only attach the OTS report. The Combofix log and other logs should be posted directly on the thread. :)

Can you try to run GMER again using the instructions posted before? Are you still receiving redirects?

Hi Rolf55,

Just one last step and we're done.

Start OTS. Copy/Paste the information in the quotebox below into the panel where it says "Paste fix here" and then click the Run Fix button.

The fix should only take a very short time.

Congratulations! Your log looks clean. :) Please follow the following steps for some housekeeping and protection against future infections.

1) Uninstall ComboFix
  • Click on Start > Run
  • Type Combofix /u in the run box and click Ok. Note the space between the x and the /u, it needs to be there.
    Posted Image
  • Over the course of the fix you've used a variety of special tools to help with the cleaning process - none of these are of any use to you now that you're clean, and it's best not to have them hanging around on your computer. OTCleanIt is a small program that removes all the leftover tools and logs from cleanup of malware.

2) Clearing files used for disinfection
  • Download OTCleanIt to your desktop and run it
  • Click Yes to beginning the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. Choose Yes.
You may uninstall Trend Micro HijackThis if you wish.
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Open Add or Remove Programs
  • Search for HijackThis 2.0.2
  • Click Change/Remove
  • Select Yes to remove HijackThis' settings from the registry.
  • Delete the folder you installed HijackThis in. If you've installed it in C drive and used the default pathway, it is C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\
  • Empty Recycle Bin

3) Microsoft Update
  • Your next stop and most important stop would be updating your system at Microsoft Update.
  • Keeping abreast with the latest security patches will save you from a lot of malware trouble.
  • Ensure that Automatic Updates are On
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Open Automatic Updates
  • Check Automatic which happens to be the recommended setting anyway.
  • Specify a time when you would want automatic updates to take place.

4) Update Java
  • Malware may exploit security vulnerabilities in the Java Runtime Environment. It is crucial in keeping it updated to minimise your exposure to such risks.
  • Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

5) Protecting yourself
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:
and a good antivirus (these are also free for personal use):
It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit
monthly.

To keep those sleazy websites at bay
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!
