black screen, no start menu on vista

Hi, since I can't get a response about my black screen on my vista, even though several other people seem to have experienced the same problem, maybe you can tell me if I can use my back up cd, to recover my computer, will it bring my Computer settings back to the original. because right now, all I have is a black screen, after I push the icon on the welocome screen. my system is Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bite
