OMG!!! I fixed it!!! it was the physical config after all. I completely took out my old hd and the primary ide cable. then i swiched the dvd to second master and the cd to second slave. AND IT WORKED!! i dont know how, teh old setup should have worked...

glad to hear its working! looks like rockster was right about the primary IDE channel needing to be empty.
