Ok please reboot and go into Safe Mode With Networking
Do this by tapping the F8 key on the second black posting screen to get to the Advance Boot Options
Using the arrow keys scroll down to highlight the above lobe and then click enter
System will continue to boot in the Safe Mode.
Once there try going onto the internet and see if the problem happens then. If so you may have a video card problem.

Hi rshaffer, the problem still exists in safe mode. This took me on another adventure searching the net for ways to test the video card. Some tests came back with an 'okay' rating, while others just went kafooey on my desktop...must be Java based. I suppose the best way to test the card is to switch it out with a new one. Thanks for all the time you've taken helping me rs!

Seeing that your Java is up to date switching the card out may fix a video memory problem that could be lurking about. Please try this:

Go to Start and then to Run and Type in dxdiag and then click Enter
At the bottom of the System page click on Save All Information
Save As a Text file and save to Desktop.Include this file with your next reply.
On the DirectX Files tab, check at the bottom of the window for any problem notes.
On the Display Tab click the
Test DirectDraw button and wait for the results.
Then click the Test Direct3D button and wait for the results.

In your next reply include results of each of the above steps.

:) Thanks rshaffer!

Results of dxdiag: System page:

Attached File  DxDiag.txt   39.2KB   204 downloads

-----

DirectX Files tab shows 'no problems'

Results of DirectDraw & Direct3D:

DirectDraw test results: All tests were successful.
Direct3D 7 test results: All tests were successful. (Although I could see the spinning box, the same odd shapes as seen before were appearing in the upper left corner)
Direct3D 8 test results: Failure at step 32 (User verification of Direct3D rendering): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code)
Direct3D 9 test results: Failure at step 32 (User verification of Direct3D rendering): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code)

Strange. Everything seems to be working correctly but yet the problem persists.
I can only think of two reasons now for the issue.
Hardware as in video card or you may have a active infection.

I suggest you go to the Malware Removal and Spyware Removal Forum and run all the steps located in the
START HERE. These self-help tools will help you clean up 70% of problems on your own.
If you are still having problems after doing the steps, then please post the reguested logs in THAT forum.
If you are unable to run any of the tools then start a new topic in the malware forum and put this in the subject line...I am unable to run any malware tools

If you are still having problems after being given a clean bill of health from the malware expert, then please return to THIS thread and we will pursue other options to help you solve your current problem(s).

Add a link to this topic so that malware tech can see what steps have been taken here
