a dialogue box is open error

The computer in question is an XP Home pc. The error "The command cannot be performed because a dialogue box is open." shows up when the the file is opened from within My Computer/file manager/desktop or when it is listed as an attachment in an email. If open office is opened up and then the open command is used and the file is opened from within open office - say writer. The the .doc file opens correctly. I have researched this problem and find it related to Norton and Microsoft Office. Neither of those two programs are installed on this computer. Thanks for any help.

Howdy msproblems.

Let's try this:

1. Log in as an Administrator
2. Hide the profile in question by renaming it (ie. go to C:\Documents and Settings\)
3. Log out
4. Log in again and rename the user profile back to its original (if it doesn't change back)
