iPod and iTunes deleting problem.

Am I able to delete songs from my iTunes library without deleting them from my iPod? The songs are taking up too much room on my hard drive so I wish to delete them...but so far when I delete a song from iTunes the song is also then deleted from my iPod! Please help!
