I need to know how to restore windows xp back to factory settings without the cd. I have a hp pavilion mx704. I was told to push F10 when the computer was starting, but where do I go from there? It asks me for commands and administrator passwords that I don't know. This was my parents computer originally and when they gave it to me they didn't save any of the disks or manuals.

Try <F11> instead

If you cannot start recovery at all by any method suggested to you, you can purchase a set of recovery discs for Pavilion laptops or desktop models via this page:

The HP recovery is the F11 key. That will only work provided that the recovery partition is not corrupt or missing.

And usually the admin password is blank.
