The Windows 95 (Win95) startup sound is mssound.wav, 135,876 bytes, found in the win95_12.cab archive file on the W95 installation CD-ROM. It was composed by Brian Eno.

Default places to unpack the file to: Win 2000 pro keeps system sounds in \WINNT\Media. Win98SE keeps them in \WINDOWS\Media.

Control Panel - Sounds has tools to set system sounds. W2K can adjust the volume of system sounds there. The play preview button is handy. Personalized system sounds can make your computer seem more cooperative.

I've been using Brian Eno's little composition as the "Empty Recycle Bin" sound for several months. It's nice to hear it once in a while, about as often as I empty the trash, and it seems musically appropriate.
