ok. first of all my computers homepage cant be changed anymore. for some reason the homepage is stuck at http://www.specialgo...info/ad/ad0271/ and that same specialgoods thing made a red circle with a white x in the middle on my taskbar and it wont go away. when i click it it redirects me to http://antispy.speci...777&said=ad0271 and says my ip address is infected by winSoc.cfg. i get continuous popus about [bleep] and pills. there are the same 20 desktop icons that wont go away no matter how many times i delete them. they all direct me to a specialgoods site. what do i do to get rid of it?

There are a few things which we have to do in order to give us the best chance of getting your system clean as you have a number of different problems. We need to download some tools, and run some online scans. I know that this can all seem very daunting, but I will walk you through every step. I strongly advise that you print these instructions out for easy reference, read them and ask any questions you might have before we start.

OK, lets get started



Please, update, configure, and run Ad-aware and Spybot S&D as below:
Make sure you're using the latest version of Ad-aware(Ad-aware SE 1.05) If you're using an older version, download Ad-aware SE Personal 1.05 and install it.

Before scanning with Ad-aware SE Free:
Run a FULL adaware scan using the following configuration below

• Update
  • Select Check for updates.
  • Then Connect and download
• Click Start
• Select Perform Full System Scan and hit Next to let Ad-Aware scan your drives.
• It will list malware files and registry keys. Click Next.
• Under the Critical Objects tab, rightclick in the list, choose Select All, then Next.
• It will ask for verification of checked items-. Choose OK.
• Close Ad-Aware, Shut down and reboot your system.

Scanning in Spybot Search and Destroy:

1. Download and Install Spybot S&D, accepting the Default Settings
(Please ensure you have version 1.3 final.)

2. Go to Start > Programs >Spybot Search & Destroy and choose 'Spybot S&D'

3. Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D

4. Click the button 'Search for Updates' and download and install the Updates.

5. Next click the button 'Check for Problems'

6. When Spybot is complete, it will be showing 'RED' (RED) entries BLACK entries and GREEN (GREEN) entries in the window

7. Make sure there is a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.

8. Choose Fix Selected Problems and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

9. REBOOT

Also, run at least 2 of these online virus scans:

Housecall<<<Put on 'Autoclean' and delete what it can't clean.
Panda ActiveScan<<<Accept default settings, save and post the log
RAV online scan<<<Add a check by 'Autoclean', leave everything else as is.
eTrust Antivirus Web Scan<<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful
Bitdefender ScanOnline<<<Place a check by everything under 'Scan Options'.
Command on Demand

Reboot when finished.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Show Hidden Files

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer(if present):

Rehide the hidden Files

We need to undo the steps we took to make sure all hidden files were showing so please:
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading uncheck Show hidden files and folders.
* check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.



After that, Reboot.


Please rescan using HJT and post your new log here so we can see whether your system is now clean.

Ok I did everything you said. The only thing i couldnt do was delete the three folders in safe mode. I guess i dont know how to. This is a stupid question but i am not sure what Windows Explorer exactaly is. No matter how many times i tried to delete the RO-HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page www.specialgoods.info/ad/ad0271 it wouldnt go away.

Sometimes that R0 line wont go easily and may need a particular tool to get rid of it.

Good job so far, almost clean, . We just have to deal with that R0 line. It is important that you read fully then print these instructions out as you will be working part of this fix in safe mode and may not have access to the text on your computer.

*Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
*Extract the program to your desktop the reboot into Safe Mode as we did before. Once you are in Safe Mode, please double-click on Killbox's folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file paths listed below ONE AT A TIME (EXACTLY as it appears below. This is really important so please double check to make sure!):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\systr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\popup_bl.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\guninst.exe


Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the NO button. Do this after each one until you have entered the LAST file path I have listed above. After that LAST file path has been entered, press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts. If you receive a message and your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

Once your machine has rebooted, please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to the entry listed below.If you are running Spysweeper, then make sure that its resident protection is disabled as it could prevent the fix from working

You will be pleased to hear that you have to change your nickname as your log is clean, well done mate.

Now that we have got cleaned up, how do you stay that way?

First, I would strongly advise you to create a new system restore point then delete all the old ones.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

Detect and Remove Programs:

• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:

• AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
• Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
• More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
